Marilyn Heywood Scholarships

Jennifer Hocevar and Lynn Penhale are this year’s recipients of the Foundation’s Marilyn Heywood Memorial Scholarships, worth $300 each.  Congratulations, Jennifer and Lynn.

Marilyn Heywood was a tireless community volunteer, valued employee and co-worker, and a sensitive and committed friend.   She was a School District employee who volunteered with the Quesnel Little Theatre and the Library and was an avid bridge player.  She was killed in 1984 by a drunk driver.   After her death, this scholarship was created by her friends and colleagues. (Eulogy)

Jennifer Hocevar hopes to become a teacher, and is studying at the University of Northern British Columbia for a Bachelor of Arts degree.  She was on the Principal’s Roll from Grades 8-11 and the Honor Roll in Grade 12 at QSS, and won a number of academic awards.   One of her teachers reports, “… she is a gifted artist and writer … a marvelous student and an even better person.”  Jennifer was also a volunteer with some of the youngest and oldest members of our community, working with kindergartners and the residents of the Dunrovin Lodge.  She also worked part-time while a high school student.

Lynne Penhale is a music student at the University of Victoria, and plans to become a composer.  Her goal is to write for symphony orchestras.  During high school, her many accomplishments included: organizing the Songwriters Showcase concert, achieving First Class Honors on Royal Conservatory exams in Music Theory and Grade 8 piano, and being invited to the provincial Honors choir.  Her music teacher says of her, “She has been a highly valued member of the music program … she has developed impressive musical skills … her improvisation talents and leadership were instrumental in the CSS jazz Combo achieving a Silver award at MusicFest Canada ….”  Lynn also is a strong student.
